fjclandscape

At fjclandscape, our design approach is grounded in specificity, delivering unique solutions tailored to each project through careful analysis of the site, brief and budget, and of its physical, environmental, historical, cultural, commercial and social aspects.

As a multidisciplinary studio, we integrate architecture, landscape, interiors and urban design to deliver site-specific projects. With fjcplace we ground our work in Connecting with Country frameworks and place, extending this collaboration to client and stakeholder working groups for deep insight into culture, aspiration and identity.

Ecologically sustainable development principles are integral to every landscape we design. As an integrated practice, we combine landscape with built form so that natural and built elements complement each other, enhancing both function and beauty.

111 Castlereagh Street

A layered rooftop landscape above the heritage-listed David Jones building, where meandering paths and lush planting frame city and harbour views.

Liverpool Civic Place

The landscape celebrates the ecologies of Country, from the riparian landscapes of the Georges River in a sunken courtyard to a grove of deciduous trees that gives the plaza summer shade and winter sun.

Wellington Street Park

A north-facing park and linear green space on Wellington Street, framed by the curvilinear form of Wonderland at Central Park.

Cambridge Place, Harrington Collection

Restoring fine-grain pedestrian networks in The Rocks and celebrating the rocky coastline and escarpment of Warrane. AILA NSW Award of Excellence for Small Projects, 2024.

UTS Central Rooftop Terrace

Terraces and winter gardens through UTS Central, with trees chosen for instant shade and sculptural form, forming a pollinating corridor through the campus.

Our Approach

Sustainability

Integrating ecological principles, social considerations and economic viability, we create resilient and regenerative outdoor spaces. Landscape infrastructure manages stormwater, reduces heat island effects and improves microclimates and air quality. Native pollinator corridors connect habitats across rooftops, streets and parks, while rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling and xeriscaping reduce water use and improve water quality.

Designing with Country

Our work commits to finding pathways to truth telling, healing of Country and bringing benefit for First Nations people, always with the aim of reconciliation. We avoid token gestures. From the outset we learn from First Nations Elders, knowledge keepers, artists and communities, in a process that guides the first concepts through to completion.

Multidisciplinary design and BIM

As a multidisciplinary studio, our projects integrate built and natural environments. Clients benefit from cost efficiencies, closer collaboration and a single point of contact. Because we design in a shared BIM 3D model, landscape concepts are tested alongside the built concepts, refined efficiently and communicated clearly to clients and communities.

Collaborative design and safety

Design solutions succeed when they come from genuine collaboration with clients, end users, First Peoples, fabricators, subcontractors and the wider community. We manage brief development, run design and community engagement workshops and resolve conflicting requirements. Our integrated Safety in Design process assesses the risks of each design element to eliminate or mitigate them.

Working with industry and maintenance

fjclandscape has long-established working relationships with tier one builders, fabricators and landscape subcontractors, and shares in-house knowledge of metalwork, joinery and some of Australia’s most complex green roof systems. We work alongside engineers, ecologists, horticulturists and materials specialists, and prepare maintenance documentation that promotes sustainable, cost-efficient and timely maintenance.

Public and communal spaces

Our studio is founded on public projects that have evolved into valued precincts for their communities. Each project begins with rigorous analysis of place (Country) and community, and a commitment to inclusive engagement. Squares, parks and communal spaces are designed for everyday use and for events, so they remain valued over many years.

Planting

Planting specifications prioritise native plants adapted to local climates, soils and biodiversity, with drought-tolerant species that conserve water, reduce maintenance and enhance habitat for native fauna. Layered planting provides shade, seasonal change and structure, and each palette is tested for its setting, from exposed rooftops to shaded courtyards and busy streets.

Embedded landscapes

Green roofs, vertical gardens, green walls and integrated courtyards promote natural cooling, reduce the heat island effect, mitigate stormwater runoff and improve air quality. Designed with the building from the outset, they bring planting to the places people live and work every day, and add canopy and habitat to dense urban centres.

Bespoke furniture

Furniture defines the public domain, offering places for rest, social interaction and engagement with the environment, and helping to shape community character and a sense of place. We design bespoke seating, edges and elements in durable materials, detailed with fabricators to suit each site, its use and its long-term maintenance.

Podiums and green roofs

Our founding studio, MGT, delivered the green roof of Parliament House, retaining the form of the original hill. The combination of landscape and built form has remained integral to our response to area and site constraints. Today, podium and rooftop landscapes extend usable open space on dense sites, from communal gardens to public terraces.

Artwork and interpretation

We place the public realm and public benefit at the centre of every response, layering each site with meaning through historical and cultural interpretation, public art and placemaking strategies. Working with artists and First Nations knowledge holders, we help each landscape tell the story of its place and the people connected to it.
