Health

fjcstudio designs health facilities that support care, clinical work and training, in buildings that are welcoming for patients and practical for the people who work in them.

Our work includes Ballarat District Nursing and Healthcare in regional Victoria and the Wolfson Building at the John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford.

Ballarat District Nursing and Healthcare

A former factory transformed into a sustainable healthcare facility, with room to grow the nursing workforce, clinics and training.

The Wolfson Building, John Radcliffe Hospital

Home to the UK’s first dedicated centre for stroke and dementia research, on a sloping site beside the Old Headington Conservation Area.

Health Approach

Care at the Centre

We plan health buildings around the people who use them every day: patients, families, clinicians and support staff. Clear arrival, daylight and calm, legible spaces help reduce stress, while efficient layouts support the routines of clinical work.

Room to Grow

Health services change quickly, so we design flexible buildings. At Ballarat District Nursing and Healthcare, the redevelopment allows the organisation to expand its nursing workforce, increase clinic output and add training facilities within a contemporary, flexible workplace.

Reuse and Sustainability

Existing buildings can often be adapted for health use. At Ballarat, disparate buildings originally built as a factory were transformed into an environmentally sustainable healthcare facility with improved energy efficiency, extending the life of the existing fabric.

Health and Research Together

Clinical care and research increasingly share a site. The Wolfson Building, part of the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, brings stroke and dementia research onto the hospital campus, close to the clinicians and patients it serves.
