Placemaking

A central focus of fjcstudio projects, irrespective of scale or typology, is an integrated response to the public domain. Our work acknowledges that it is human habitation which imbues a place with social and cultural significance.

Bunjil Place

A public plaza and fluid foyer gather library, theatre, gallery and civic services for the City of Casey under a sheltering roof, creating a civic space for community life, gathering and outdoor performance.

The Concourse

A public place with no pressure to purchase, The Concourse gives Chatswood more than 5,000 sqm of accessible open space and is now the focus for the civic and cultural events of Willoughby.

Our Approach

Places people embrace

As government and the private sector increasingly recognise placemaking as both a strategy and a discipline, fjcplace continues to receive national and international recognition for its approach to place. The real measure of success is how communities embrace our projects, through welcoming, human spaces that offer settings and opportunities to gather, connect and spend time.

Understanding each place

fjcplace develops placemaking strategies through an interactive process involving community, clients, artists and consultants. We analyse each site in depth to understand its culture and society, its demographics and community assets, and its physical environment and microclimate.

Working with community

Our broad experience in community consultation underpins our collaboration with community representatives, to understand what is unique about each locale and its context.

An integrated studio

As an integrated urban design, landscape and architecture studio, we apply our knowledge and the experience of stakeholders to test how a site will be used in different modes and by different members of the community. Partners add economic, market, retail and food and beverage advice. Our aim is to strengthen social fabric, both through the process of creation and by delivering sustainable, enduring public assets.
