Sustainability

fjcstudio’s commitment to sustainability is long-standing and consistent across building type and scale. The practice adopts a holistic sustainability strategy, embedding environmental performance and carbon assessments alongside social, ethical, cultural and ecological sustainability from the earliest design stages.

This approach allows sustainability to actively shape the architecture, creating buildings that respond to climate, place and culture, consume fewer finite resources, support the wellbeing of their community and local ecosystem, and remain resilient and adaptable over their life.

Our leadership in sustainability has received industry recognition, and our portfolio demonstrates a sustained track record of exemplar projects that have achieved 6 Star Green Star ratings, 5 Star NABERS ratings and WELL Certifications across culture, community, workplace, learning and living typologies.

We believe design quality and sustainability are inseparable. People keep, care for and adapt buildings they value, and that longevity is itself a sustainability outcome.

Biofiltration atrium

At Surry Hills Library and Community Centre, biofilter gardens in a glazed southern atrium filter and oxygenate air drawn from above the street, tempered by a geothermal heat exchanger.

First 5 Star Green Star public library

Melton Library was the first public library to achieve a 5 Star Green Star Public Building rating, in both the Design and As Built categories.

Pioneering carbon-conscious design

At Legion House, the heritage refurbishment was designed to the Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council’s definition of a zero carbon building, and for on-site power from the gasification of materials including waste paper from the adjacent office tower.

Half the heat transfer of standard glazing

At Yellamundie at Liverpool Civic Place, the library’s triple-glazed curtain wall combines performance laminates with two layers of white frit, while automated shading tracks the sun.

Closed cavity facade with timber blinds

200 George Street is clad in a pressurised closed cavity facade, with timber venetian blinds inside the cavity that adjust to the sun to control heat load and glare.

Prefabricated, low-carbon learning spaces

At TAFE NSW Padstow, a demountable kit of parts inserts thermally conditioned rooms into a heritage building without touching its shell, reducing upfront carbon compared with a traditional fitout.

A thermal labyrinth

Beneath Surry Hills Library, air passes through a labyrinth of staggered masonry that stores coolth from a night purge, tempering the air while avoiding extra ductwork.

Sydney’s first 6 Star Green Star workplace

Darling Quarter, designed for Lend Lease, achieved 6 Star Green Star in early 2012, under Office As Built v3.

Pioneering sustainability

  • Sydney’s first 6 Star Green Star workplace. Darling Quarter, designed for Lend Lease, achieved 6 Star Green Star under Office As Built v3 in early 2012.
  • The first public library to achieve both Design and As Built 5 Star Green Star ratings. Melton Library and Learning Hub achieved both ratings under the Green Star Public Building pilot tools: Design PILOT in 2013 and As Built PILOT in 2014.
  • Air cleaned by plants. At Surry Hills Library and Community Centre, biofiltration planting in a glazed environmental atrium filters air drawn in from outside.
  • Cooling from thermal labyrinths. Thermal mass labyrinths cool incoming air at Surry Hills Library, the Tyree Energy Technologies Building and Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centre, where the labyrinth is built from salvaged concrete panels.
  • Pioneering carbon-conscious design. At Legion House, the heritage refurbishment was designed to the Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council’s definition of a zero carbon building, and for on-site power from the gasification of materials including waste paper from the adjacent office tower.
  • Australia’s first closed cavity facade. At 200 George Street, the closed cavity facade (CCF) is the first in the world to integrate automated timber blinds, which track the sun to control heat gain and glare.
  • Powered by the sun. A 150 kW photovoltaic array covers most of the roof of the Tyree Energy Technologies Building at UNSW, which achieved 6 Star Green Star under Green Star Education v1.
