Campus Workplaces

fjcstudio designs campus workplaces: low-rise, large-floorplate buildings and precincts where work, public space and city life come together. They balance commercial performance with public amenity, opening workplaces to parks, promenades and the street.

Darling Quarter, a true integration of urban design, architecture and landscape, was Sydney’s first 6 Star Green Star workplace. It won the Office category at the World Architecture Festival, the Harry Seidler Award for Commercial Architecture and the City of Sydney Lord Mayor’s Prize.

Our campus workplaces also include Axle and the Foundry at South Eveleigh, 200 Victoria Parade in East Melbourne, 2 King Street in Brisbane, the Ben Chifley Building in Canberra and the Salamanca Building at Parliament Square, Hobart.

Day-lit atria sit above the restaurants, cafes and promenade, where the western edge of the city meets Tumbalong Park.

A central atrium crossed by curved concrete bridges brings daylight to every part of the floorplate.

Recognised with a Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award and the Colorbond Award for Steel from the Australian Institute of Architects.

The Ben Chifley Building in Canberra embraces a complex, highly technical brief to create a building and landscape that are integrated and present. Its form addresses Constitution Avenue and shifts internally towards Commonwealth Place in the National Triangle. A central atrium connects the levels, anchored at its base by a large staff cafe.
The Salamanca Building is the first stage of Hobart’s Parliament Square redevelopment for the Tasmanian Government. V-form columns mark its double-height entry from Salamanca Place, and terracotta and sandstone facades combine with glass, set on a new public platform that looks over Sullivan’s Cove and opens the precinct to the city.
200 Victoria Parade is a workplace building on one of Melbourne’s key boulevards, respecting views to and from the historic Treasury Gardens. Layered glass ribbons with thin copper films provide thermal performance and glare control above clearer vision panels, with curved transitions that respond to orientation, as the gateway site moves from commercial to residential in one of Melbourne’s oldest precincts.
At 2 King Street in Brisbane, double-height podium walls clad in natural materials draw on the material heritage and craftsmanship of the RNA. An urban verandah along St Pauls Terrace opens sightlines into King Street and supports pedestrian flow from Fortitude Valley station, framed by sculpted V-shaped columns that reflect the RNA’s engineering heritage beneath warm timber soffits.

Our Approach

Integrated Precincts

Urban design, architecture, landscape and interiors are designed together, so workplaces open to parks, promenades and public spaces, as at Darling Quarter. Designing the precinct and its buildings as one gives people a working environment that extends beyond the office floor, with places to meet, eat and spend time outdoors.

Connected Floorplates

Large floorplates organised around day-lit atria, bridges and interconnecting stairs connect teams across levels and support collaboration and change over time. Visible movement between floors encourages chance encounters and a shared sense of community, while floors can be reconfigured as organisations grow, restructure or adopt new ways of working.

Active Ground Planes

Restaurants, cafes, retail, childcare and community uses bring the base of each building to life and connect workplaces with their neighbourhoods. Active ground planes serve workers and visitors through the day and into the evening, support local businesses and make each campus part of the wider city rather than a closed enclave.

Sustainability

Darling Quarter was Sydney’s first 6 Star Green Star workplace, and Axle at South Eveleigh received the Master Builders Association (NSW) Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency. Atria, high-performance facades and efficient services are designed together to reduce energy use and environmental impact over the life of each building.

Wellbeing

Natural light, fresh air, views and natural materials shape healthy workplaces where people choose to spend their day. Atria, terraces and landscaped spaces bring daylight and greenery deep into large floorplates, giving people places to pause, meet and work outside, and supporting comfort and wellbeing through the working day.

Civic and Heritage Settings

At Parliament Square in Hobart, the Salamanca Building sits within a precinct of heritage buildings and new public space, linking Salamanca Place to Murray Street. Workplaces in civic and heritage settings are shaped by their context, with scale, materials and public spaces that respect historic fabric and give back to the city.
