Masterplanning

fjcurban prepares masterplans for campuses, cultural precincts, town centres and growth areas. Each sets a clear framework for built form, open space and movement that can be delivered in stages over time.

Our masterplans range from the University of Adelaide’s three campuses to the waterfront at Acton, Canberra and the concept plans for Blackwattle Bay.

Blackwattle Bay Precinct Plan

Three masterplan scenarios, followed by the urban design statement for the state-led precinct rezoning, finalised in 2022.

Acton Waterfront, Canberra

An urban design framework that respects the 1918 Griffin Plan and guides the planning and staging of the waterfront.

Our Expertise

Long-Term Frameworks

Our masterplans set out built form, open space, movement and staging, so each stage adds to a coherent whole, as in the University of Adelaide’s three campus masterplans. Clear principles for height, setbacks and public space give each later design team a firm brief, and frameworks are tested for how they will work over decades.

Respecting Place and Legacy

Each plan begins with its context: landform, water, Country, heritage and the city around it. At Acton Waterfront, the framework respects the 1918 Griffin Plan and the Griffin Legacy, and now guides the City Renewal Authority’s planning and staging of the waterfront. Respecting legacy gives new places depth and meaning.

Testing Scenarios

We test options before settling on a plan, so clients and government can compare yield, amenity and public benefit side by side. At Blackwattle Bay, three draft scenarios led to the urban design statement for the state-led precinct rezoning, finalised in 2022. Testing early makes trade-offs visible while they are still easy to resolve.

Cultural and Civic Settings

We plan cultural institutions and their surroundings, from the twenty-year strategic masterplan for Old Parliament House to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and Melbourne’s Southbank cultural precinct. These plans balance heritage, public access and the changing needs of each institution, and give each a clear path for growth.
