Parliament Square Hobart has received the John Lee Archer Triennial Prize at the 2025 Tasmanian Architecture Awards. Awarded by the Tasmanian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, the prize recognises the most outstanding project across Commercial, Public and Educational Architecture and Urban Design over the previous three years.
The prize follows the project’s success at the 2023 Tasmanian Architecture Awards, where Parliament Square received the Colin Philp Award for Commercial Architecture, the Roy Sharrington Smith Award for Heritage Architecture and the Award for Urban Design.
The jury commended Parliament Square as a sensitive, refined intervention that achieves an ambitious program: a new public square, contemporary offices for the Department of Premier and Cabinet, parliamentary committee rooms, a new link to Parliament House and a luxury hotel. Heritage buildings were carefully restored, revealing materials that tell the story of each structure, and the design brings together heritage conservation, sustainability and innovation.
Occupying an entire city block behind Tasmania’s Parliament House, the project reconnects historic streets and public parks and returns valued buildings to public use. Over twelve years it has grown into a civic quarter of government, hospitality, retail and public space overlooking the River Derwent.
We thank the many collaborators, consultants and craftspeople who contributed their expertise over more than a decade, and the Australian Institute of Architects for this honour. Read more about Parliament Square and our work on precincts.
