Nunawading Community Hub wins at the Architizer A+Awards

Nunawading Community Hub, Melbourne, by fjcstudio

Nunawading Community Hub has been named Jury Winner in the Institutional, Community Centers category of the Architizer A+Awards.

Located on the once derelict Nunawading Primary School site, linked to its old football oval and Tunstall Park, the hub is a place of gathering and shared knowledge on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung People of the Kulin Nation.

The heritage schoolhouse is integral to the project, standing at the site’s threshold, reflecting local materials and holding the memories of many childhoods. Abstract white forms rise as a backdrop to the heritage fabric, the park and community life. The design responds to a constrained budget with simple forms and everyday materials, and its pitched roof profile speaks to the surrounding post-war homes.

The oval and the heritage building shape the footprint, providing flexible settings for a wide range of community activities with equitable access for all. Transparent architecture connects the hub to its park and suburban setting, celebrating the people who use it and the place they value.

We thank our project team and all of the consultants, project managers and subcontractors who helped deliver the project, and John Gollings for his photography. Read more about Nunawading Community Hub and our community work.
