Protecting the heritage buildings

At The Garrison Church, fjcstudio's work protects the hierarchy and legibility of the heritage buildings. New additions stand apart from the historic sandstone, connections to the heritage fabric are kept to a minimum, and the parish hall's original timber roof and stone surfaces are freed from later partitions.

An open, transparent language

Its architectural language inverts the solidity of the historic fabric: open, inviting and transparent. Similarly, a new amenities building is tucked into a recessive location to preserve the hierarchy and legibility of the heritage buildings, providing compliant bathroom facilities for the congregation and guests without negatively impacting the church complex.

Freeing the parish hall

In conjunction with the pavilion, alterations to the parish hall liberate the existing timber roof structure and stone surfaces from internal partitions and other later extensions. Sensitively positioned and detailed, new ‘pods’ recede from the original walls and roof, housing modern services for the new kitchen and audiovisual functions. These interventions support reinvigorated secondary church uses, including small to medium-sized meetings and social groups.

A light touch on heritage fabric

fjcstudio minimised new connections to the heritage fabric and, where essential, carefully tuned them to celebrate the distinct character of both the contemporary additions and retained heritage.
