SBS Headquarters

Australia’s multicultural broadcaster
As Australia’s multicultural broadcaster, SBS is unique in the Australian media environment. Its function is to provide multilingual, multicultural and indigenous radio, television and digital media services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia’s multicultural society.
SBS was a foundation tenant in Federation Square and commenced operation at the site in 2002. The original fitout was completed concurrent with the construction of Federation Square. Little had changed over the first 16 years of their tenure, with the SBS fitout remaining largely unaltered in that time.
Consolidating the tenancy
Changing business requirements and new technology created an opportunity for SBS to redevelop their tenancy and consolidate all facilities on one floor through the demolition of redundant technical facilities, the removal of old office style facilities and the adoption of an activity based / agile workplace model (ABW).
The adoption of ABW is supportive of wider cultural change initiatives designed to promote a more collaborative organisational structure, necessary in an increasingly complex media environment.
Studios and media centre
The project included the provision of six next generation radio studios as well as an updated television studio. A new media centre and promotion space were also established.
The refurbishment consolidated all operations to a single floor through a staged approach, initially involving demolition of redundant facilities, the conversion of these areas to open office space, and finally staff relocation to these areas.
