A layered landscape for learning
The landscape design at Fort Street Public School forms a vital part of the school’s transformation and heritage integration. The project reimagines the outdoor environment as a layered, multifunctional terrain that enhances learning, play and community engagement. Central to the design is the enhancement of a constrained inner-city site, embedding accessibility, safety and environmental performance into every level of intervention.
Heritage and place
A key objective was to connect the heritage fabric of the school with contemporary educational needs. Native planting enriches biodiversity and gives the school a distinct identity tied to place. Durable, tactile materials withstand intensive use and reinforce the site’s unique topography. Tiered terraces, outdoor classrooms and shaded play zones are carved into the landscape to encourage exploration and interaction.
